A TOP Child Speaks

Excerpts from a speech delivered at Ezer Mizion's Terror Orphan Program Art Exhibit entitled "Children Create and Overcome"

Shalom. My name is Oded. I am 13 years old. Three and a half years ago, my father was killed in a shooting attack a minute's drive away from the Einav settlement, where we live.

A year ago, Efrat from Ezer Mizion suggested that I join their mentoring program. I didn't know what to expect. Would the program help me in any way? Would it be interesting? And why did I need it at all?

Today, I can answer all the questions I had before starting the program. The program has taught me a lot, and it is fun and interesting. With David, my mentor, I can play, have fun, and most importantly, talk about anything, whether it's something that interests me, things that are bothering me, or something that I am not sure about.

When we started the mentoring program, David and I thought that we needed to do something special during the mentoring time, something that we could work on throughout the mentoring. At that time, there was a weekly newspaper that was distributed to all the people in the settlement, but that paper did not have a permanent editor. David thought that editing the newspaper would be an interesting and enriching project to work on together. David told me his idea - that I would become the editor of "Meida-Einav."

When I heard his idea I was a little apprehensive. I didn't know if I would succeed in editing the paper properly, and I was nervous that the frequency of the publication of the newsletter would be too much of a burden.

Today, a year after the first newsletter appeared, I am still editing and publishing the newsletter every week. A year ago, I would never have imagined that my newsletter would stand here at the Ezer Mizion Art Exhibit alongside dozens of other art projects created by children like me.

I would like to thank Ezer Mizion and the people who support and accompany us, the children victimized by terror. You make it possible for us to continue living as normally as possible, and you allow us to benefit from this blessed project.

Thank you very much.
